Tommy has been in the EGU coaching system for many years. Gary says "It was great to be involved recently with Tommy's putting pre-shot routine and see how together we reduced his routine from 24 seconds to 13 and how this has greatly improved the rhythm of the stroke. He is a truly great guy and deserves all the success that comes his way!". August 2010

Chris Wood Praises EGU Coaching System

Chris Wood, who was voted European Tour Rookie of the Year last year, has written about the time he spent in the National Squads run by the EGU. Gary has been an England Technical Coach for 14 years and coached Chris, through Gloucester county and EGU National Squads, until Chris turned Pro at the end of 2008.

Chris writes a blog for GOLF 365 and in it he said on 9 June 2010...

"Coping with lots of travel is a huge part of being a professional golfer and, thanks to my experiences in the amateur game, I've been able to cope smoothly with that transition. It is something I thought would make an interesting topic this week.

I was a member of the national squads which are run by the English Golf Union (based at Woodhall Spa in Lincolnshire). Obviously we did a lot of work on our game but there was also off-the-course training and plus lots of travelling which educated us on what was needed and how to be strong enough for life on tour when we turned pro.

The sort of opportunities I had to play around the world just wouldn't have been available if I hadn't broken into the English teams and got that EGU support.

I travelled all over the globe - to Mexico, America, Russia, Australia and all over Europe to play individual and team competitions. I perhaps didn't always realise it at the time but those trips made me a better and tougher traveller.

The other big advantage of being in the England set-up was what happened in the winter: instead of staying at home, trying to practice in the freezing cold, I joined my team-mates in southern Spain, often at a course called Arcos Gardens, where we could sharpen our games for a week.

I still return to Arcos Gardens as a pro because it is a great venue: it is really quiet, the facilities are superb and after five days there with the national team I used to go back to England feeling like a much better player.

Being around a bunch of competitive golfers who are doing well is another benefit of being in your national squad. For example in early 2008 Danny Willett won the Spanish Amateur which got him invites to two professional events in Spain. He finished top 20 in both and I was able to think, "I play all the time with Danny, if he can do that on the European Tour, so can I."

When you understand how important being in the England set-up was you can appreciate how desperate I was to get in it - and yet during my junior days I always fell a bit short, even though I sometimes thought I had done enough to earn a place.

But it is really important how you respond to failures. For example, I was also very disappointed to miss the cut in the Brabazon Trophy later in my amateur career (when I expected to do very well) but both times I used the setbacks to drive me on; to make me determined never to let it happen again; to motivate me to work harder.

In those early days before selection I would look at the England players with their England shoes, wearing the England rose, being part of the team and I wanted it too: it created a picture of what I wanted to achieve.

And then eventually I got there: I became part of the under-21 squad, then the A team and finally the full England team itself.

Probably my best feat during that time was to win the EGU Order of Merit two years in a row. The first year was a Walker Cup year which made it quite special, as was defending it successfully; it kind of cemented me in as one of the better amateurs in the country.

Around about then they also introduced an amateur world ranking which was pretty cool - I think second place was my best position and I think only Rickie Fowler was above me!

I also won plenty of individual events and one of those was the 2007 Russian Amateur Championship which was typical of the trips I was describing earlier - a learning experience!

We often went away in little groups of three or four and as 17 or 18 year-olds you can imagine it's a bit of an adventure!

You learn to become independent quite quickly, doing adult things whilst you're still a teenager - things like coping with missed flights and lost baggage, dealing with confusing situations and being in foreign countries that are very unlike home.

On that first visit to Moscow we got into taxis and two hours later we were still in them wondering where we were going and if we would ever get the chance to play golf!

I went on to win that event and consequently was invited to return a few weeks later to play in the Russian Open, then an event on the European Tour.

I was really happy to go back because the Le Meridien is a totally lush course, really top class. In fact I'd go back and play it now if it was still on tour I liked it that much.

My amateur days ended with my appearance in the 2008 Open Championship at Royal Birkdale. It was a great week and I finished in fifth place, being roared on to every green by the packed galleries.

After such a tremendous experience I felt that the prospect of returning to amateur golf and playing in front of no-one at all would be tough to do; a bit anti-climactic. Once you've had a taste of that excitement, it is so difficult to give it up.

I was desperate to play in the Walker Cup but that was 18 months away and apart from playing in that I had pretty much achieved all I could do in the amateur game so I thought, "I've got into a great position, I've made a bit of a name for myself, I'm feeling good, let's go for it."

I think it was the right decision." June 2010

England has Best Start to Season Ever

Gary has just returned from Woodhall Spa, the English Golf Union's National Headquarters, after the final training camp for the England Men's Squad. The news is that 2010 has already produced the best results ever for the national side.

Matt Haines beat his England and Walker Cup team-mate Tommy Fleetwood at the 37th hole to win the Spanish Amateur Championship at La Canada.

At the end of March England retained the European Nation's Cup with a dazzling display of golf at Sotogrande in Spain. The 4 man team, Matt Haines, Tom Lewis, Chris Paisley and Tommy Fleetwood, all finished in the top 6 players.

Gary, who is one of 3 Technical Coaches for the Squad, said, "The winter coaching sessions have been excellent, with three warm weather training camps in Arcos, Spain and last week in Woodhall. All have been well planned by Head Coach, David Ridley and alot of valuable work has been done with the Squad. I am very proud to be a member of the England Coaching Team and seeing the guys achieve such success on the world stage is great"

Bob Meston, England Mens' Squad Manager wrote recently, "A special mention for David Ridley and his team of Coaches. They continue to give the players world class support and encouragement to do better, and to maximise their potential." 11 April 2010

Leon Fricker Wins Andalucian Junior European Open Title

Leon Fricker more than lived up to his pre-tournament favourite label, winning The Andalucian Junior European Open by two shots from Yorkshire's Jonathan Fisher. Yelverton Golf Club's teenage talent was the only player to remain under-par throughout the Spanish competition. The 16-year-old, likened by golf writers to a young Tiger Woods, brought home the trophy with a final total of 218. Leon admitted he will draw great confidence from winning on what is considered one of the toughest tests in junior golf.

Gary, who has been coaching Leon and his older brother, Ryan for almost 2 years, says "The two boys are fantastic to coach. They understand the huge value and significance of short game and have committed themselves to a process of continual improvement. They work with me on every area of their game and are sure to be challenging in major events this year. What a fantastic start to the season!"

The finals at the Andalucian Junior European Open is the only championship in Europe where the finals are played over five rounds of the tough Alcaidesa Links and Heathland courses, set in Spain's southern region. Having made the cut to the final, Leon then conquered the course at Finca Cortesin, where the Volvo World Matchplay was staged in December.

Leon, who plays off plus-one, said he can look ahead with more optimism. He said: "Obviously, I'm really pleased to have won the title. It's a hard course and the competition was keen right up to final. But I was pleased with my form all the way through which was consistent and that will give me great confidence for the rest of the year. I needed this win for my morale as much as anything as I don't feel I had a great year in 2009. I put that down to growth spurts but now I feel fine and a lot stronger and a lot more confident because of the win in Andalucia."

Leon was just as impressive in the qualifiers at Tewkesbury Park in Gloucester in December, recording the lowest round in the four-year history of this championship. His gross 68, five under par, proved a two-stroke winning margin and a new course record. 10 February 2010

Gary who has been the Short Game Coach for Gloucestershire Juniors since 2001 and in that time has coached Chris Wood, Chris Lloyd and Adam Carson among many talented players in the county, says, "This is a great result for the county and I am proud to have been involved for nearly ten years with Gloucester. They have a wonderful team behind the juniors, especially Dave Hares and Mark Powell, who have developed a fantastic coaching system and it is great to work with them and the boys." 8 February 2010

They are very sociable, with 'Campers' as we call them, swapping email addresses and asking us to run follow up Camps for the group. We know we have the formula right and deliver the highest quality of coaching within great facilities."

England Complete a Great Year with a Convincing Win in Home Internationals

England has completed 2009 with a clean sweep of all three Home International opponents at Hillside last week. England Technical Coach Gary Smith, who was at Hillside for the pre match preparation, said, "I am delighted that the guys have had such a great win. We knew that the other nations would really want to beat us after 7 of our players were selected for the 10 man Walker Cup Team. But the team are so talented and focused and wanted to finish with a high. The EGU England Squad has a great support team which gives the players the best opportunities to succeed, with a great Lead Coach in David Ridley, a very efficient and supportive Manager in Bob Meston, an excellent Captain in Colin Edwards plus the other talented coaches that I am priviliged to work with. "Access to this level of coaching is rare"

"A superb coaching course for those who wish to improve!"

"Absolutely blinding!"

David highlighted the long game issues and worked on the students individual technical swing requirements and Gary was instrumental in honing and introducing new thoughts and techniques on short game. It was a camp that reflected all that the highly successful and respected England coaching system has to offer, from early morning jogs, or walks, pre breakfast through to the end of day squad review session with Brian.

Gary said "I know all the coaches thoroughly enjoyed their involvement with the players and I am delighted that each student not only enjoyed the experience but took away some really valuable information to help them reach the next level in their golf. Everyone got on great and there were plenty of laughs along the way". 9 June 2008
