"The DVDs are superb. Nearly as good as a personal lesson from you! Certainly of the greatest help in reinforcing what you taught me [on which I'm working hard to embed into my ancient brain and muscles]. Congratulations on a super teaching concept, excellently communicated. Well up to Professorial standard!"
"Just watched the DVD. Absolutely love it. Really impressive. Well done. I want to go and practice now!!!!"
"Got the DVDs and have watched them several times. I feel the content is excellent and hope to apply your concepts to my short game. I understand the bounce principle and have a book by Stan Utley that recommends this method. Your DVD does a better job than the book in making it user friendly."
"I received the Linear Approach and Short Game Solutions DVDs a fortnight or so ago and they have already proved so effective that I am getting my parents to adopt the linear approach!"
Luke Donald World No 1 Talks Short Game
“The big thing for me on pitch shots is getting the club head swinging and let that move my body.... I start with the ball slightly forward and my hands centred in front of me.... I want to feel the club swinging down and through. The momentum of my club pulls my body to the finish... The club head should pass your hands... I also weaken my left hand a little... For spin, as I do for lofted pitches, I play the ball forward ...I’m exposing the bounce....that part of the club will skid along the ground through impact... The club should skid, not dig at impact. The skidding action gives you room for error.” Quote from Luke Donald in Golf Digest Magazine October 2011
"Luke has a weapon that has taken him to the top of the world - his short game" Robert Karlsson
My Secrets to Better Wedge Play by Bob Vokey - extracts from Golf Monthly (February 2012)
USE THE WEDGE PROPERLY
The biggest fault I see in amateur golfers is that they use the leading edge of the wedge far too much. They move the ball back in the stance and hit down on the ball with the leading edge. This isn't how wedges are designed to be used and it results in inconsistency, causing a lot of fat chips and pitches. The modern wedge is designed in a way that allows the sole of the club and the trailing edge to be utilised.
NEUTRAL HANDS
Another reason that many amateurs don't use the bounce of wedges properly is that they push their hands infront of the ball at address. This decreases the loft of the wedge and causes them to get too steep. For me your hands should be neutral at address, allowing the loft of the club and the bounce to do the job it was designed to do.
LEARN FROM THE BEST
Rory McIllroy and Ricky Fowler are two of the best players I have worked with in recent years as they use the wedge as it is designed - this means that the sole and the trailing edge make contact with the ground first. Watch them and you will notice they have a very consistent rhythm throughout the swing. They keep everything neutral and simple which means less can go wrong. All players can learn from this.
USE WEDGES THAT SUIT YOU
If you play on lush soft fairways, then more bounce will keep your wedge moving through the turf rather than digging in. If you play on firmer - links - like turf, less bounce will help prevent the thin shot by digging in more. A proper fitting will really help you find a wedge for your game.
KNOW YOUR GAPS
When it comes to full wedge shots it is vital you know how far you hit each one of your wedges. 4 - 6 degrees is a good rule of thumb for gaps between wedges. I much prefer to see 4 wedges in a bag rather than 3 or even 2.
CONSIDER LOOKS
If you don't like the way a wedge looks at address it becomes harder to trust it and make a committed action. This really comes down to personal preference so make sure you look at all the different shapes and finishes on offer before selecting.
Gary said "When someone like Bob Vokey talks about using the bounce and neutral hands, which is something I've been promoting through my DVDs, seminars and coaching for a number of years, then we should all listen. To me it's logical, simple and highly effective. For short game think Linear!"

Gary says, "Outstanding quality information and videos for the wedge game with the exception of the ball position which I prefer nearer left heel for target focus. Take a look at the shots of the Pros off the putting surface with a wedge - Go Sliders!"

Do you want to reduce your scores and lower your handicap quickly?
Yes, I thought so! Gary says, "You can learn to drive it further, you can learn to swing the club better and you can spend a lot of money in achieving them. All of this is important, but what real impact will it have on your game and your scores and how long will that improvement take? With an understanding of the latest short game techniques and a determination to become the best player around the greens you can be, your handicap will improve, your scores will come down and competitive success will follow.”

Skills Testing
Gary regularly uses skills tests in his coaching. “I love to recreate a competitive environment by using skills tests to challenge my students in pitching, chipping, lob, bunker shots and putting. These can include a Final 10 Focus. At the end of a practicse session the student plays 10 shots which they have been practising and with the smart scoring system, which I use, they test themselves and record the total score, as well as how many shots finish short/long/left/right etc. Really valuable information played in a competitive environment. I like to set target scores and include a fun forfeit with some students if they don’t achieve a certain standard! This really focuses their minds and adds to the pressure of the task – ideal for highlighting students’ issues and weaknesses.”

Wedge Spec
The equipment you use and the ball you play with, can aid as well as harm your short game.
WEDGES
VOKEY-CALLAWAY-CLEVELAND-TAYLOR MADE-PING-NIKE-MIZUNO all produce excellent wedges but which is best for you? The answer..... Get fitted with clubs specifically designed for you.
LOFTS - To fit in with your 9 iron, PW so that the gap between clubs is consistent avoiding gaps i.e. 9 iron - 43 degree / PW - 47 degree / Gap wedge - 51/52 degree / SW - 55/56 degree / Lob 59-60 degrees.
LIES - Really important to set up the wedges to sit correctly for perfect execution. Most wedges are far too upright, producing pulled shots to the left, with a compensation steer to try to avoid the problem.
This is, in Gary's view, one of the biggest issues when working with club golfers and can be disastrous because it leads to so many negative issues.
BOUNCE - This is a really important area which is overlooked and often misunderstood by many golfers. The bounce is the angle created by the lowest point of the sole near the leading edge, to the back of the sole away from the leading edge. This is often known as your 'best friend' and when used correctly, using the Linear Approach to Short Game, ball striking consistency can literally go through the roof.
Gary's suggested bounce requirement for wedges is :
48 degree loft - 5 - 7 degrees bounce
51 - 52 degree loft - 7 - 9 degrees bounce
55 - 56 degree loft - 10 -12 degrees bounce
59 - 60 degree loft - 6 - 7 degrees bounce
Remember - You can always grind off bounce to suit your playing conditions, technique - but you can't increase it!
